Hypnosis Beats Diet For IBS Relief
my clinic in New York City, we find that hypnosis beats diet for IBS relief. Therefore, when standard media comes out with positive feedback on hypnosis, we’re thrilled. But that is just what the WSJ did (click here). In this article they talk about two studies from Sweden that found that one hour a week of hypnosis for 12 weeks eased symptoms of irritable-bowel syndrome in 40% of patients (compared with 12% in a control group). The medical establishment, for whom I have a great deal of respect despite its sometimes needless intransigence, admits there is little to be done for IBS aside from a change of diet. I have been getting far greater success rates than the 40% mentioned in the article, but then, I am not limited by doing hypnosis alone. In fact, my IBS protocol includes acupuncture and, yes, targeted nutritional supplements. My research has found that, over time, the three processes together create closer to a 70% symptom reduction.
Managing Pain and Anxiety Through Hypnosis
There is more in the WSJ article worth noting. Not only does it state that hypnosis helps with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, it also says…and I quote: “We can teach people how to manage pain and anxiety, ” says David Spiegel, a psychiatrist and director of the Center for Health and Stress at Stanford University who has studied hypnosis for 40 years. “There’s been this mistake in medicine that if you have a certain amount of tissue damage, you should feel this amount of pain. But many things can alter how much pain you feel.”
Using Mind Over Matter is Real
What’s particularly gratifying is the fact that Dr. Spiegel acknowledges that pain is not an objective phenomenon. In fact, if we can use our minds to alter not only physiological functions (imagine blushing, the face reddening, etc., all due to a thought). We can also alter how we react to pain. I have helped people to go from being unwilling to go to a dentist, to refusing Novocain/pain killers while they were getting root canal. That is the power of hypnosis. On the flip side, I also utilize acupuncture for IBS, anxiety, pain management, and other related issues. That is why people often come to me: for the double barrel solution that I offer (but never push on anyone).
